This is a really good question. I say that partly because it is so incredibly difficult to answer! I would love to just see what happens. It is amazing how much has changed and been discovered in the last 50 years so it is hard to imagine what might happen in the next 50 years. I would love to see new ways to work in biology which could help us to cure diseases.

      Hi Chlocharbell,

Well I can really only talk about what I think will happen about diseases in the future…..because I have really no idea about technology!! Expect I like Pam’s flying cars idea!

I think that in the battle to control infectious disease I think that we’re going to eventually eradicate (get totally rid of) a couple more diseases. You might know that we got rid of Smallpox a good while ago and recently (like in the last month) it’s been announced that we’ve eradicated a pretty nasty disease of livestock called Rinderpest! I really hope that we’ll manage to eradicate Polio next. If you want to learn more about how we’re trying to do this, you should check out my friend called Kath in the Iron Zone because this is what she works on! The next disease I’d really like to go is Rabies. While we don’t have it in this country, it still kills a lot of people and animals worldwide every year. And you know what, rabies and polio are totally preventable because we have really good vaccines! But the problem is that it costs a lot of money to get these vaccines to the people who need them most, which is mostly people in poor countries!

I really think we’re going to get better at treating and preventing other diseases like cancer, leukaemia and performing such operations like organ transplantation. I also think that we’re going to have to use more animal organs for these operations (called xenotransplatation) because not enough people sign a donor card!

Where do you see science going? Any big new inventions? Do you think you’ll be responsible for a huge breakthrough in science?

      Hi Chlocharbell!

I’d like to see so many things. I think a practical change would be better respect from companies and governments to science – not necessarily more money (but that would rock) but better directed money, as a lot is wasted or mis-used I think. This is especially true when it concerns drugs and healthcare.. That’s a practical change that I think really should happen. Otherwise, destroy every disease we can! Mankind beat smallpox… We should extend that to another disease like HIV

      I hope that helps 🙂
