• Question: What do you think is the most useful invention?

      Hi Dan,

      Without a doubt, it is either the microscope or the internet. The microscope isn’t really that useful anymore – I mean it has a very very big role in hospitals, but the reason it was important was because it proved to humans so much about tiny things, and opened our minds to a world smaller than us – of bacteria, and also viruses I guess. That changed medicine and our ideas of disease and infection. I guess it was only needed once though..

      The internet however may be the biggest human invention. It has caused so much change in the world – now we know very quickly the news from the other side of the world, can contact people anywhere, virtually instantly, nearly across the whole world!

      In the right ways, the internet still has many things to offer us, and its clear that it will keep shaping our lives. Consider that most gadgets now interface and use the internet in some way – like mobile phones and even some weird things.. Some fridges have connections which can order food for you when it gets too low. That seems a waste of money, but it shows how much people can make use of the internet and the abilities it gives us.

      Hi Dan,

      Can I be a total micro geek and say soap or sanitation systems? These have had a HUGE impact on human life and still can if we can implement them in so called ‘slum’ areas where sanitation systems are not in place!

      But the most useful invention in my life, I’m going to talk about two:

      In my work life: computational power! I can run a statistics test in under 5 seconds that twenty years ago would have taken a room full of computers a couple of days to do!

      In my ‘real’ life šŸ˜€ : Mobile phone and the internet. You might have realised by now that I really do like to chat and also probably that Iā€™m a bit of a home bird. So I would think that if I didn’t have the internet or a mobile phone I don’t think I could have left Ireland. In fact I actually have two mobile phones, an Irish one, so my family and friends back home can ring me for free and a GB one so I can call my friends here.

      What do you think Dan? What do you think is the best invention and what do you think is the most useful invention for you?

      Hi Dan,

      All the other inventions are also very useful.

      The invention of the antibiotics and it applications has continued to save many lives till date. Sometimes, I do ask what the world health would have been without them. These aantibiotics are powerful medicines that they fight bacterial infections. When used properly, antibiotics can save lives. They either kill bacteria or keep them from reproducing and our body’s natural defenses can usually take it from there. Although, antibiotics do not fight infections caused by viruses, such as Colds, Flu, Most coughs and bronchitis and Sore throats, unless caused by streptococcus.
