First of all African swine fever virus (ASFV) has been researched by people for many many years (since about 1960’s) so there is quite a bit of stuff known already about ASFV for me to base my investigations on. Also I look at the research on things that are similar to ASFV like other viruses that are similar, I look at what is similar then see if I can test it in ASFV and see if it is the same. So yes there is things for me to base my research on. This is how it is for most science research, you find things that are in some why similar to what you are looking at then you test the theories you build.
